As i am using a song by a band who frequently do videos for their songs, i want to use their videos to influence the techniques I use. The band have a particular pattern that they follow while making music videos. A lot of their videos are very extravagant and slow pace, exactly how the music is. Several of the videos have bizarre scenes. For example. The video for Mien is stereotypically insulting rap videos, and “I’ve seen the butcher” is simulating a blood orgy. Deftones are known for their strange, original videos and music therefore I want my video to continue this trend.
7 Words.
This was Deftones first music video, typically badly edited and overused effects, much like all bands first music video. Although this was their first produced video it began the strain of Dark and bizarre music videos. All the added sample videos over the live show does not disturb the flow of the music video but it does change the emotions at points, for example the section between 1:57 and 2:01 is a huge change in pace and contrast from the shots used before and after the short time, giving a disoriented feel. This Music video may be a basic low-budget video but it gives the feel of a well produced and thought out video.
Bored.
Again a low-budget video with many effects used. This video is a lot slower compared to 7 Words, but still has a strange feel about it. This music video uses a lot of fish eye lens within it, this lens alone gives off a strange feel because of the angles in which the frame comes out. Also during the live scenes there is a huge change over depth and height of the camera, constantly shifting from high to low shots and close to long shots.
My Own Summer.
Slow, strange location and strange colours sums this video up in 3 words. The fact they are floating in the ocean off the bat gives the music video a bizarre and dark feel to it. The contrast and strange samples added adds to this effect by confusing the viewer. The dark fade used around the frames also adds to this dark feel as well as the constant deep of the camera in and out of the water.
Be Quiet and Drive.
This video is very simplistic, with very little effects and samples, but still it gives off the strange feel. The Defocusing and the sharp shifts in angles makes the video very disorienting, were as the samples and the extended cuts keeps the video flowing and calm.
Back to School.(Mini Maggit)
This video is more fast pace matching the speed of the song. There is constant changes in camera angle and shots used. In some parts there is even different video qualities used. This use of multiple cameras and a lot of switches in angle and length of shot is still used within the bands videos, so these effects are clearly needed in my video to add to the verisimilitude of my piece being made by the band.
Hexagram.
jolting camera, quick shifts in-depth, slow motion sections and additional sample sections. So far these are the trends made by the Deftones videos. Although this video is very different compared to those before it (Being mainly a live performance and using original signature techniques such as lower contrast and dark scenes.) it still keeps loyal to the techniques used in the pervious videos.
Hole in the earth.
Dark. Strange. Bizarre.
Mein.
This video goes back to the original type of videos that Deftones are known for. Slow and bizarre scenes with a lot of slow motion. This video has a little meaning to it as it was designed to humiliate the Rap music scene, but in a sense mocking the music videos made within the genre. All the dancers and people surrounding the band is the bands way of mocking the music industry. This music video is a critical video for me to take influence from as it has all the key features that I would like include.
These videos are key in what I want to follow. I hope my video will keep the signiture techniques together and hope to use them in a way which feels like the band would release it.
deftones also have a trend with the album and single covers they release. From all of the covers they have released so fair we can conclude that the band choose to have a very simplistic style to the covers. All of the images included are usually one to a cover, and have very minimal text (just the band name and the title of the song.) I will make my album cover and album sleeve follow this trend. I plan to have a continuous front and back cover, by having them just be reverses of one another. Then have the images within the album sleeve be stills from the music video it’s self, just edited slightly and have the background defocused slightly.
