Foundation Portfolio

Research into chose assignment. (Print)
The first lesson of Media I looked into my chosen assignment brief, we looked at very basic print guidelines and looked at the layout of magazines to use in the future. This is a significant piece of the course as in future print creations I will know the basics of a magazine layout, therefore cutting out the process of basic research.

Learning to Blogg and creating a production-log.
Along side the research into print, we also learnt how to blogg, which is new to me as in the past I have never blogged. This is a significant skill that I learnt as it would be used throughout the rest of my course.

Presentation of Ideas.
Although this was not part of the primary task, it is relevant to the main task were we now had total freedom to what we created. Showing our peers the ideas helped me know which idea would be more popular. I chose to do the music magazine as it was a basic concept and all my peers agreed it was a good idea. This is a significant process as it shows which ideas were more suited to my chosen audience, teenagers.

SMART Targets.
This skill was hugely significant to my course, learning to make guidelines to follow and make sure I sticked to the time barriers that I made for myself helped me hugely in developing my time keeping and planning throughout the course.

Development into usage of software and software techniques.
Being completely new to the Macs and Photoshop, I learned from the very beginning, embarrassingly I didn’t know where the on switch was. But from the first day onwards I learnt new skills about the Macs and Photoshop that would have perviously not been available to me. By the end of my foundation portfolio I was a lot more comfortable with Macs and Photoshop although i was still a beginner.

Extended research into existing products.
Being restricted to just research into magazines because of the nature of the foundation portfolio, I could only develop my knowledge on the magazine and print side of media. This was increasingly useful throughout the course. I learnt many real media conventions and began to follow these conventions to increase the realism and verisimilitude of my media pieces.

Questionnaire into Magazine content and Audience.
The questionnaires that I used also helped me develop skills into increasing my magazines verisimilitude and realism. By asking questions such as ‘Is £3 a realistic/good price for a magazine?’ or ‘Where do you think this magazine would be sold?’. Asking questions like this I became more aware of the prices, face, location of selling etc that I would not of know before hand. I learnt in more depth what an audience wants rather than my assumptions.

Mock Up magazines.
Mock up magazine helped hugely as it developed skills in 2 areas;Creativity-I learnt new techniques and methods that I began experimenting with and gave me the freedom to do certain techniques and conventions that I liked. For Example The Devil Wears Parda mock magazine where I used the glow around the header and information on the front cover.Preparations The process of making mock magazines helped me learn magazine placements E.g. where and what size to have my Header or sub-title. I also used them as a guideline to what I wanted my final magazine to look like. Practice makes perfect so I felt this prepared me to make magazines at a much faster rate.

Templates for final Piece.
Much like the mock magazines the templates helped me prepare the layout and organisation of my magazine. Giving me a clear image of what exactly my magazine will look like. Without this process the original image taking and the final piecing together of my piece would have taking up a lot more time and may have resulted in having to retake original images. The Templates were a significant skill as it is the foundation of any piece of media.

Original Images.
I had never experimented with photo taking in an education level, so the original image taking was new to me. This step was probably the most significant thing I done in my foundation year of media because it was the basis of my print pieces throughout the year. This experience helped hugely with improving the quality and style of my later productions.

Editing together final piece.
Again this helped develop my skills with both the Macs and Photoshop. The practice with the mock magazines and the templates I had created made this process simpler but with Photoshop there is always something to experiment with and improve practice with. Cutting, correct placement, colour balancing etc were all developed and improved during this process.

Focus Group for feedback of final piece.
This was a key part of the post-production as it helped me get a board opinion on my final piece. I focused on asking my target audience of teenagers but I also tried to gain opinions from different social groups. The use of this techniques was used throughout my course as it’s a way of finding problems with my piece and correcting them. It was also helpful as although some problems could not be resolved in my foundation part of the course, it helped my advanced part of the course as I would try to prevent these problems.

Evaluation.
Evaluating my final piece made me come to my own conclusion of my final piece and make me reflect on the good points and bad. This is a major significance as it helped me learn what was in need of improvement and what I know how to do well. The evaluation made me consider my second year and helped me choose exactly where to focus on when it came to creating my second set of products.

Advanced Portfolio

Initial Ideas Following Assignment Brief.
The ideas that I came up with this year were more realistic and in-depth compared to the foundation year. By familiarising myself with the equipment and software of the production process I had become more aware about what can be done in the time that I had to complete my coursework. It had become clear what exactly could be done and how to do it, as before in the foundation year I would simply dismiss an idea If I felt it was going to be difficult. The foundation year had made me aware of numerous techniques and new software that I would have never been able to use before, so my choice of techniques and software to use were a lot more vast then the beginning of the foundation year. This experience and awareness of time etc made my creativity increase as before I wouldn’t experiment with unfamiliar techniques etc.

Presentation of Ideas to Peers for Feedback.
The presentation of my ideas was a huge deal easier thanks to my experience with the software and the experience of the foundation year. This is because before I was in a initially new surrounding, I had not studied media before and did not know exactly what were possible, but because of the first year I felt the presentation of ideas were easier. Mainly because before I felt like i was presenting my ideas to strangers, but with the year studying with the peers I felt more comfortable around them. This helped significantly as the pressure of presenting had gone, the embarrassment had gone. It would have been difficult for present ideas in-front of a group before I had developed the technique of public speaking.

SMART Targets.
At the beginning of writing my SMART targets in the first year, I felt the they were just a waste of time and had no real relevance at all. I was wrong. The use of SMART targets made the timing and planning of my second year easier and increased my production levels dramatically. Without the technique of the SMART targets, the pre-production of my coursework could have taken a significant amount more time than it did. This developed organisation skill has helped my levels of production hugely as they gave me the time to update and change my coursework were needed.

Extended Research into Existing Cross-media Conventions and Texts.
The extensive research was simpler to do this time round, the knowledge I had earned from the foundation year gain me a key technique into finding evidence. Before I would have simply googled ‘Magazine template’ but now I know that is being to simplistic. I now knew where to get example magazine templates and could create my own from looking at sample magazines. In a sense I had cut out the middle man, as the knowledge I had of the last year could be used in my second year. Trial and Error, to a certain degree, was my way of researching. For example, I would know not to simply google ‘Rotoscoping’ because it is not a very well known technique. Instead I found examples of where rotoscoping was used and looked up the creators/directors to find in-depth information into their various of the technique.

Mock Ups.
Again, compared to the first year, this part of my coursework was done faster and to a higher standard. This was because of the experience in creating them as part of my first year, the process in the second year was simpler and easier because of the knowledge I had gained from the pervious mocks up I had created. In a sense I could have used them as my templates in my second year, because they were very basic and board, meaning that they could have been applied into any field of my production with slight changes. They also helped in the second year as the media conventions, that were needed to be research in the first year to make sure I was making a realistic media piece, were already part of my knowledge. I didn’t really need to research into conventions that I needed to follow as I had familiarised myself with them.

Research into Post-production.
Research into post-porduction was a new aspect into research I had not perviously covered in all areas of my second year production. I were familiar with the effects and techniques that could be done on the print side of my brief, but the audio and video editing was a new set of rules and techniques to me. My pervious knowledge of research on the other hand, did help in the process. As stated in the section about Extended Research into Existing Cross-media Conventions and Texts, I had developed advanced research techniques. So finding relevant information about the post-production techniques I wanted to use was easier to find in at a more advance level. I did not needed to learn the basics of video editing, but to learn the specifics of the techniques I hoped to use.

Correspondence and Pre-production Documentation.
Again, this is a new part of the research and pre-production that I had no experience in as a result of the first year, but the first year can be used an example to how this was made easier. The research I had done in the first year, although not relevant to the documentation, helped me in finding out exactly the documentation that I needed.

Taking Original Images and Filming Video.
The experienced I earned from the first year heavily influenced and effected the quality of my images. I took my first year images as an example of the standard I needed to surpass. This helped me increase my quality of work instantly as I used my first year as the lowest standard that needed to be achieved. As well as using the first year pieces as an example, I also took the techniques I had learn’t from the first year and used them in the second year. So from the original pieces, I had increased my creativity and standard of my work by just wanted to be better then them.

Editing Final Piece.
This part of my coursework was a mixed process. The experience I had gained from the first year helped heavily with my editing of the print side of my brief, but I had very little experience with the film/audio editing because of the nature of the assignment brief for the first year. I did have some experience from a short tutorial done at the beginning of the the first year before we chose either the print or Video guidelines. This was insignificant experience though. The only aspect of the first year that could be used as an example to helping the editing would be the confidence of the software I had earn’t and the increased creativity I felt I had and that I was more open to experimentation.

Focus Group of Final Piece and Multi-media Package.
The focus group was very similar to the first year, I asked my peers to watch and analyses my final pieces, but it was slightly different as I covered both briefs from the first year. Before they were just looking at the print, but this year it covered both print and video.

Evaluation.
My evaluating skills had increased across the two years, so my evaluation was more in-depth and detailed compared to the evaluation of my first year. The evaluating technique I had learnt increased my quality of work across the two years but the key part that improved my evaluating techniques was the knowledge into the media industries and conventions I had gained. Relating my media pieces to conventions of a real media product was becoming increasingly easier for every piece of media I looked at. I learn’t to pick out key conventions within a media piece and to evaluate the levels of that convention. This was hugely significant to evaluating my own piece as I aimed to achieve those conventions to make my final pieces have verisimilitude.

Question 1b, Applying a media concept to one piece of coursework.

When Girls Telephone Boys music video

Genre

The genre of music video that I tried to replicate in this piece of coursework was similar to music videos that are made for rock/metal music, this should be clear to those who listen to the type of music as it is loyal to certain traits and conventions that the music would have.

It follows typical media conventions that a music video of the genre would do; Fast past editing that follows the tempo of the music: This gives a edgy feel to the music, but it is dependent on the tone and pace of the Song. If a song is slow and sluggish it will most likely have a music video to support these traits, slow faded transitions and long cuts would be typical of this. Where as a fast pace song with plenty of changes in tempo will likely to have a music video that quickly cuts from frame to frame with minimal transitions.

Cutting and switching scene on beat to the music, this is a very popular trait within the rock/metal music video industry. As most music will not be to a 4-4 beat it is a significant way to cut and make the video ‘fit’ with the music. If the cuts were out of time and sudden it won’t have fluidity, this will weaken the videos appeal to the audience. I tried to make sure all my cuts were correct to the beat of the music, as it does give a feel that the video and the music were designed to work with each other.

Lots of extreme close up shots, this is a good technique if you want to give the impression you are watching the band. Lots of music videos will also have live shots of the band playing the music. I feel this gives the impression you are there watching the band. Which is significant as many people who listen to that kind of music will likely see bands at concerts, so if they achieve the feeling they are at a concert while watching the music video it will influence them to watch it.

As well as this following the traits of the genre I also followed a sub-genre that is key with the band I used, key features like the actors used and the location was all influence by that band so ‘their genre’ is also seen within this music video. For example, the band I used always use odd areas to record their music videos, so I choose to record on a public street on a typical day. Although it’s not too the extremes that the band follows, (Recording on floats in the Arctic Ocean) I feel it would be something that they would do as it’s unexpected.

If I were to analyses my media piece in relation to Genre I would say I represent my chosen genre very well. I followed extensively the popular media traits that are used within the rock/metal music industry. I also fell the extended traits that I used to simulate the video being made by the selected band adds another level of depth to the genre I covered. The ‘cult’ videos of deftones were hard to emulate as they have to their disposal a much large budget, but I feel I have successfully achieved this ‘cult’ video feel with a much smaller budget because of the select traits I chose to use from the band that I could replicate easily.

Narrative

The story of the music video comes from the lyrics and story behind the song, but is slightly tweaked to make it easier for me to record and plan as the original story was far to complicated and controversial to do for a student film. I did want to stay loyal to the story but the location, time and preparation would of taking up too much time and effot to execute properly.

The original story of the song follows the life of a young teenage girl, she is of american decent and is from California. She is a typical skater teenager. When she is returning from a night at the boyfriends she begins to worry about her surrounding, being from a rough neighborhood. She then stops at a phone box to ask her boyfriend to walk her home the rest of the way but he becomes easily distracted in the conversation. She, upset and frightened, continues to walk home and is met by 3 shady men who then begin to follow her. She turns back in hope to reach the telephone and call the police but she is closely stalk by three men and is cornered then attacked towards the end of the song.

In regards to my story within the video, I had to change my story in order to comply with the resources I had. It would of been ridiculous to do the music exactly how the story intends it to be: Filming in America and Have a Women of American decent for starts would make the filming process impossible. I changed the location and characters to make it simple to do, I reduced the 3 men to 1 and the teenage girl was an english teenager. The story stand very similar to that of the original story, a girl is returning home from the boyfriends and is stalked and attacked by a man who she sees during her journey home. I had to cut out the idea of her being attacked as it is a very sensitive subject so instead I took influence from the film Matrix and Matrix Reloaded. A character on these films has the ability to absorb people just by touching them, I chose to use this instead of attacking the girl. This use of the absorbing people also helped my develop the usage my desired technique of Rotoscoping, it easily integrated the use of rotoscoping as I could draw over the character to illustrate they were being absorbed.

Although I am disappointed that I had to change the original story idea, it was very unlikely I could do the story to a decent standard. The likeliness of finding a Brown haired 20 year old American women was bleak, so I had to alter the story. As well as the lack of actors and the location effecting the story I had to change it because of moral and ethic reasons. The story line covers a very serious issue of the mistreatment of women, but I felt that would be a very controversial topic to make a video about. I needed to change the story to a stage that did not underestimate the seriousness of the issue, but could not do the story to a tee. So I feel although I did need to step away from the story, I covered the main issue within the song as well as keeping true to some details.

Representation

The representation of the music video is kind of old fashion and based on a 50’s/60’s family lifestyle. I wanted to represent this time as it is a key trend that is relevant to now. The old fashion lifestyle is a trendy thing in todays media so I wanted to represent a darker side to the era.

Many domestic violence issues came up during the time period that were over shadows and in a sense forgotten, so I tried to show that this things happen. It isn’t the main focus in this video but I hoped it was a addressed as a sub story within the piece. I used the 50’s/60’s era to build my characters looks and characteristics upon as well.

The female within the story is a typical ‘housewife’; she is ‘under the man’s thumb’ (the person she was ringing on the phone) in the beginning of the music video there is little speech between this women and the husband/boyfriend saying she is “Hell-a sensitive”. This sexual innuendo, although this is a part of the song I used it to my own advantage. I used this short piece of text to represent a different side of my character. Although in my video it is not shown her saying it I feel it still stands as a way of showing a more erotic character.

To give more depth I also tried to represent naivety, fear and curiosity within the actions of my character. This was done through the story of the song, because a normal character would not stand and stare at a strange individual: This I feel represents the curios side to the character. The frightfulness is shown through the uneasiness through the character’s expression and body language. (Luckily I had a good actor!) Maybe my representation of women could be seen as ignorant and naive but that’s exactly as I intended. I wanted the stereotypes of the 50’s/60’s to be shown in this piece as if it was a 50’s/60’s man making the video.

Audience

The audience of my music video is both very narrow and broad. I planned to make the video both appealing to a wide range of people interested in the music genre, using typical music video traits to make it similar to others within the music industry. I also tried to make a cult feeling to the music video, having references to the band that I have made the music video for.

Trying to appeal to the wider audience was a simple process, I looked at various examples of music videos to simulate them and take key techniques they used. Cutting scene on time, fast transitions etc. I done this so I can appeal to the audience much like other music videos, I used these typical conventions that would make a music video ‘exciting’ to that group of people. They should feel a familiarity when watching this video as it uses stereotypical techniques all music videos use.

As well as making the video similar to others, I chose to make my characters and situation of the characters easy to relate to. I followed stereotypes of teenagers when choosing and making my characters. The characteristics of my main female character is close to those of a common teenager. I chose to make my character have blonde hair, scruffy clothes that are slightly provocative, a mobile phone etc to fall in line to a common teenagers life. This is what I consider what a teenage female girl would wear, although this might be being slightly ignorant, looking at other music videos that I researched girls also dress like this in those videos.

I also used this method of making the female character dress provocatively to attractive a male audience as well. The sex appeal of the character will stick in the minds of the audience. The male character as well follows things stereotypes of the people who would listen to this kind of music. Long hair, skater-shoes etc are traits of that section of people within the music industry.

I tried to stay true to my selected bands conventions, that only people who are fans of the band would understand. Like an inside joke or an easter egg to the band, e.g. the hair colour of my female lead character and the shoes worn by my male character. These things should be obvious to the fans of the band, and they should feel a certain sense of joy when they come across this. I feel this helps me represent my audience to another degree; as only certain people will understand the easter egg, and these certain people were who I wanted my initial audience to be. Obviously I wanted to keep a wide range of audience but these added features were a ‘gift’ to my main audience.

Media Language

No extended shot transitions, Shots switch in tempo to the music, traditional music conventions, Cinematography: Sound, editing, characteristics,

THEORIES!: HYPODERMIC NEEDLE, LONG TAIL, USERS AND GRATIFICATION, THE PERFECT STORM.

This piece is aimed to simulate the use of the hypodermic needle in a ignorant sense. I wanted to show the audience the stereotypes of the 50’s/60’s, but I didn’t intend for this to be the only source of evidence that the audience takes in. If they were to assume this is the way that women were treated and represented then they are foolish, this is why the hypodermic needle theory is weak. If someone was newly introduced to the period and their only knowledge of the era was this video they would have a very negative view, which is what I aimed to achieve but not for them to only have a negative view. I wanted to make them aware of the negative side of a very positive era.

How the long tail theory interlinks with my music video is also very key. As the music video is aimed mainly to have a small cult audience it is unlikely to have a huge amount of viewers when it is first released, but that’s the point of the long tail theory. I hoped for this music to leave an impression on the viewer and for them to remember the music video, so as time passes people will continue to view it as they remember it as it stands out. E.g. the Rick Rolled Never gonna give you up joke. Rick Astley’s song got more views from this than this then it had when it was first out and the years after.

The Uses and Gratification theory can only be used narrowly. Only the entertainment, Integration and Personal Identity factors can be used in relation to my media piece.

The Information side of the theory can be used as I explained in the Hypodermic Theory but it is not a decent source of information (such as the new or documentaries) which the information side of the theory is design to be used for. The Entertainment aspect is self explanatory, the music video is aimed to entertain and have the audience watch it and listen to the music. The Integration part of the theory could be used to educate the viewer into a social group or era that they were not not very familiar with before hand. Although this could be argued that it should be a part of the information side of the theory, it is secure and more relevant to this part of the theory as most people are already aware of the social groups that surround them just not to an extent as they should be.

From the 12 production briefs that we we’re given I had some instant ideas and plans I wanted to do, I selected 3 main Briefs that I felt most comfortable with and started to draw up plans.

Short Film – My first Idea include a short film, a piece of radio advertisement and a poster to support the film. This film was to be based around the Song Kim by Eminem, which is the story of a case of domestic violence.

Music Video – This was my Key Idea and I wanted to follow the story of the song with the stalker and the girl being attacked, with an the side pieces of the project to be an; album cover, album artwork sheet and a piece of advertisement to go along side a music concert sheet. A key technique I was going to use was Rotoscoping within the video to make it stand out.

Documentary/ ‘Mockumentary’ – The final key idea was to make a new report on the problems with foot and mouth amongst goats, and how they are effected. It was to be mocking the ridiculous news reports normally seen on the news. It would include a radio advert, T.v advert and a final short interview with a goat. This was heavily influenced by the humor of shows such as Brass Eye and Green Wing.

I took these 3 ideas and presented them to my peers, from their reaction to the 3 possible ideas I wanted to do the music video gained the most positive feedback. This was mainly due to the use of rotoscoping that I suggested to use within my video, this wasn’t my favorite idea but the I did really like the technique rotoscoping.

I began to research into difference forms of rotoscoping and how exactly I was going to do it before I committed to the Idea. My Initial research suggested it was going to be Impossible as I needed to traditionally print my film and use negatives, but it was going to be less time consuming then I first thought. The form of rotoscoping I came across only required me to edit my films in Photoshop with no need to traditionally print the films and directly drawing on the negatives. Although it became realistic to do so it would still require much time as I still needed to edit every frame digitally.

As a result of the needed additional time, me and Andreas draw up a time schedule and a plan for me to successfully finish my in-depth research and being production. we planned for me to have all additional research to be done by the 17th december giving me 2 months to finish it all before I begin any preparation towards production, after I had done my research we suggested I would have all my paper work and forms filled and done in time to start filming and printing pictures on the 5th of November and be done with filming by the end of January.

Once these targets and plans had been made I began research into my chosen brief right away, The first part of my research I looked into was to look at similar music videos to the genre of music my song falls into. I gathered significant information into fast, slow, bizzare and simplistic music videos and took influence from these to decide what camera angles and frame rate to use. As an addition to these I also researched into the band I chose to use and looked in depth at all music videos they have produced across the 5 albums they have produced. I wanted to keep true to the traditions and techniques used by the band so this additional research really helped me into deciding what exactly I would include within my song.

Another way I researched into was a series of album covers, I wanted to keep my album cover and artwork simplistic and basic. I wanted to have either one; image, object or person as the front cover and back cover along side still shots of the music video to be edited and put as part of the album artwork. I chose to investigate into band albums that may not be part of the genre of music, to get a more vast select of information to evaluate. I researched into 6 very different bands that have very similar, but at the same time unique, pieces of artwork. From this I could finalise an idea of how I was going to use the simplistic technique.

I felt this was significant research into my project: I had researched into how and what exactly I wanted to include within my music video, I had taken examples of album artwork and took influence from a series of different pieces to deiced on exactly what I was going to include within my print side of my brief, and I had finilised with Andreas and my peers what techniques were good and how exactly I was going to fit in the time to do so. I now felt confident into starting my research and preparation into filming and shooting my pictures.

The first step I took into preparation was to gain permission from the music company to use the song I wanted to use, a simple email was sent to ask the company to allow me to use the the music video as long as I had no intention to gain profit from the production. After I sent the email I began to draw up a strip and story line for my music video, not being very time consuming because of the nature of the story I was able to draw a story board to go along side this. I did redraw the story board at a later date but I will come to that.

Once I had completed the story board and strip I chose to take time into gathering actors and locations. I aimed to have 4 actors and gain around 7 locations just incase production in one location fails to delivery. I managed to get 6 locations in all different ares so I had a key selection of locations to film, but unfortunately 3 of the 6 were limited to when and how I could film due to ever being on a private road of work. So although I did have a vast choice I really only had 3 to chose from, this could of been a complication but the locations I was able to film in where more than useful.

The actors were for the picking, I had a huge selection of participants willing to film so I chose people for their likeliness to the characters rather than the lack of choice. I did reduce the amount of Stalkers I would work with to just one because I felt 3 stalkers were to many, even though that is how many are in the song. The rotoscoping also effected my decision to use less actors, the more actors the more rotoscoping I would need to do and the depth in which it would needed to be done.

Now my actors and locations were secure and chosen, I decided to discuss with Andreas what my next step would be. He suggested to; do some more research and re-write my story board to a better standard, Gain more experience into the camera work side of the project and practice with the editing process. I decided these were significant steps I needed to take as the year before I had no real experience with the Camera or the editing process apart from personal projects.

My story board was the next key step I took, I re-wrote the scenes in more depth and added more detail to the images and added more information about the length and depth of each scene. It was significantly more detailed compared to my pervious story board but unfortunately I still couldn’t going into a depth that I would of liked because of my time schedule and the nature of the video. My main concern now was not the story board but to be ready for production as soon as possible.

My Filming was the next stage, my print would be done after the filming as the majority of images I was going to use were going to be still images from the film itself, so I needed to film and edit as soon as possible. I began filming over the christmas break and felt confident with what I was producing, although they was a slight complication, I hadn’t taken into consideration the lighting of my clips. As I filmed I ignored the fact it was getting dark while filming so the clips I had produced was useless. This was a spanner in the works as now I had useless media clips and now needed to film again before I could advance.
I did not waste these clips though, although I could not use them in my film film I decided to use them as an experiment into editing techniques and the process. It was extremely useful as it used the time I had before I could film again so I was always doing something productive, as well as giving me more experience in the film side of my project.

Once I had some significant practice with the filming and editing side of the project I chose to finalise some templates for my print side of my project, I needed to make at least 3 different templates for the advertisement side of my project as I had not yet decided which form of advertisement I was going to use as I still didn’t have the final images that I was going to use. I chose to do 3 very different types of advertisement as I felt it was needed due to how unpredictable the images I gather will be. A5, A4, and a Double page spilt type advertisement was what I chose to be an adventurous and bizarre form of advertisement. Although the templates were vert basic and did lack detail they were not necessary, the advert will be determined on the image rather than the image being influence by the templates.

My second session of filming was done after the templates were finalised. It was a swift and speedy process as I felt I was lacking behind my pre-agreed deadlines that I had made with Andreas. I took the camera from college and had filmed all sections of my story plus some additional parts that I felt could be used ever in the final video piece or as part of the print section. Once I had done all my filming I didn’t waste time, I took the camera and selected the pre-edited clips that I was going to use as part of my rotoscoping, I took these clips and edited them and put on the rotoscoping effect on at my home computer that has similar programs to the one at the college. (Slightly out of date programs but could still work with the college’s programs) The rotoscoping was painfully time consuming, as I needed to layer every frame of all my scenes which were at least 76 frames long. The rotoscoping was done in time and I was able to start editing the first lesson after I filmed, as I already had the song I was using on my home computer so it was needed.

The editing process was simple; as I had pre-edited the rotoscoping had no intention of using additional effects and techniques on my films it was simple, the only complication was the switch of scenes and frame rate. A key feature I found in the deftones videos is that all the cut are done in time with the music, this was a key thing I wanted to pick up on while filming and editing, this was unfortunately a slight down fall to my plan, as the lengths of my shots were all different. because of this the process of cutting meant I would have to shorten quiet a few of my scene’s just to make them fit into time with the music, also because the music had no real fixed time signature it only complicated thing more. I successfully done the timing technique I wanted to achieve but at a cost of length.

The production of my product had it’s ups and downs. I felt I kept to a significant timing appropriate to what I wanted to achieve, but the hiccups in certain situation did slow down process. I feel if under certain circumstance I could of produced my final piece under a faster time, but the things that did slow me down were not preventable at the time.

My final products overall I feel were an overall success.
The Final piece of filming I feel was done well, My timing to the music and the way I included traditional features of the band I feel most proud of. I could of added more effects to the video to make it more professional and follow the lines of a music video of the genre, effects like defocus and a shift in camera angle and distance to the actors were missed out on with my final piece. This would of been a nice technique to use but I feel I couldn’t achieve them. This technique is usually used with videos that have the band or artist in the video perform the song while another story or line of scenes are happening at the same time, but because I could not record the band or pose as the band I felt I show leave this technique out.

Another factor that I did not predict and am slightly disappointed about is the natural lighting in my film. Because the whole piece is out side I was completely dependent on the natural light, which significantly changes through the process of the film. I did want this to happen but because of how dark it has become it begins to lower the quality of the film. I would of prevented this if I had more time to film but because the lighting has slowed down the filming process twice before I felt I could compromise with what I already had.

Problems with the print side of the project they had similar problems. Again the lighting effected the quality of the images, because they are all from the film piece themselves they were also lowered with quality the later in the film the image comes from. This could of also been avoided by an additional shooting period but again the time factor left me with no choice but to use the images I already had.

Another problem the the print I have is the lack of depth I could have gone into with the images, because I wanted them to be stills of the images I could not take separate images and relate them to the video incase of continuity errors. I did have a vast choice of images I could use because of the high frame rate that I filmed in but finding a completely focused and stable image amongst moving images was a problem.

A last key problem I have with the project as a whole was the limited time the rotoscoping was on screen. Because of the unpredictability of the rotoscoping: How long it would be on screen and the amount of time needed to do the editing, I felt unsatisfied at first with the length the rotoscoping was achieved. I am happy with the overall result of the rotoscoping but the impact it could of had on the viewer was limited because of the small amount there is.

When I presented my final pieces to my audience there was one key problem they all had, it was the rotoscoping. They felt the rotoscoping was lacking in length and detail, I asked in my questionnaire for suggestions to improve my film side of the project and they all stated that the rotoscoping needed more length and because of the detail of the lines in the arm scene and particularly the eye scene they felt it was not done to a professional standard. I underestimated how key the detail of the rotoscoping was needed to be done and how much of it was needed to be a key feature of the movie.

The light also came into question, many questioned why the beginning of the film was at night and then the next scene was at day, it was the desired effect to make the video a loop but this clearly did not come across. I had not made it clear that the beginning and the end were of the same scene. If I were to change this I would again need more time to film.

As a whole conclusion I have mixed feeling about my final pieces. Yes I am happy with the outcome I gained from the editing process and the experience I gained was significant, but i feel with more time I could of done better. The main problems that I feel and the audience feel could easily be avoided with more time filming, the same with the print aspect of the project. With more time comes more detail and more correction that could of been made.

Today I asked a series of people to view my final piece and fill in a questionnair about it, the result I got were mixed.

I asked a series of basic questions; Age, gender, occupation etc. The majority of people I asked were male and many students between the age of 14 to 20.
I understand from this I did have a bias of young males but unfortunately I did not have significant time to conduct a in-depth survey.

Results:
7 out of 10 saw that the video was related to the genre of Rock and Metal while viewing the video without audio, and 6 out of 10 understood the print was also related to the genre. The few that did not pick that genre were over the age of 18, so from this I could conclude that the age of my audience did depend on the genre of music they related the video to, which is a positive result really because my target audience was in the age barrier of 14-20.

When I asked them to view the pieces with the audio the result were very balanced, 6 out of 10 said that the music video did work well with the genre of music that I used, the print side question had slightly better results with 7 out of 10 saying the print and music video work together. Although it seems to be a good result I consider it a failure because all the print images came directly from the video so when only 7 out of 10 picked up on this I was slightly disappointed.

The areas that the people said needed most improving were rotoscoping, all the audience stated that the rotoscoping needed improve, they enjoyed it or that it needed more time on screen. I took this as a positive result as although they say it need improving it means that they were interested in the effect.

Overall the results of my questionnaire are bias because it is a student majority of viewers, they still gave me a significant insight to what I could or could of improved as a result. Maybe if I had done another viewing mid way through the editing process I could of took these results and improved the problems that people pointed out. Character acting, rotoscoping and audio cutting were the three key issues people had with the video. I plan on resolving this issue with any future editing or new projects that I do.

I made the final templates i want to use for my CD cover and back of the CD. I ended up with 2 different types of album templates only dependent on the image that i take.

These images are the front cover templates that i made. Although the two are very different design they both will follow the same trend. I plan to have the female on the front cover with a simple black white and red design. Ever a black background or a white background with the opposite colour glow on the female. The cover with a medium angle shot will also have the faded text on the background. (The lyrics of the song) The cover on the left is the one I would prefer to do as it has more detail but having access to a white wall could be difficult so if there is a problem I will do the other cover.

The male actor will be in the exact same position as the female on the front cover. This idea is heavy influnced by a album I researched into in a earlier posted. (Front Back) I like the simplistic idea on album covers, but the continuous idea I think adds huge depth to a basic layout. With the Back cover on the left I would have the same lyrics but just reversed like a mirror image, of course I will need a barcode and price etc on the image but I will have them appear to be in reverse. The Right hand image I will have the whole back upside down so the audience will need to turn it around in order to see it but have the main image upright so when they turn it around it is upside down. This I feel will give a strange effect to the audience and make them confused about the album, I hope to also have a few easter eggs within the images just as a joke to the audience.

I will finalize which of the two templates I will use after I have taken images to use for both of the templates and will choose depending on the quality of the images I take.

Today I finalized some templates that i was going to use for the print side of my coursework. I made a series of small and large adverts that would go inside a magazine. (Ideally a music or music related magazine) As well as a few adverts that are not dependent of the genre of magazine.

This advert is one that is not dependent on the genre of magazine. It take a 1/8 of a A4 page in a magazine and breaks the advert into 2 pieces. The idea is to have the divided advert on either side of a double page spread on a magazine. This techniques is very common in magazines aimed at a audience in the age range of 14-25 (Game magazines, Music magazines etc.) I like this advertising method as it does not break the flow of the magazine page and will only get the audiences attention before and after they read the article, at first this could be seen as a negative in a attention gaining point of view but really the method is quiet successful as the audience will normally take notice of the advert before they even being reading the article.

This is your basic a4 size advertising that would normally be in any kind of magazine. Magazine like FHM and Front normally have this type of advertising because of the topic of the magazine. (mainly a males magazine with a large selection on music) I on the other hand would only have this form of advertising in a music based magazine because of 2 reasons;
1. I plan to have the advert only including necessary information to keep the adverts detail to a minimum
2. The single cover is also going to be the image I use within the advert so the audience may not understand where the image is coming from.

This form of advert is very specific because of the way it would work amongst other adverts. This advert is based on pages of gig and concert adverts you would normally see being handed out before concerts in the form of a leaflet or at the back at most common music magazines. Normally these adverts will try to cram in a lot of information in the small space that it has as it needs to advertise tour dates and album release dates. I will not be doing this, I will simply have a date and the bands web address. This method cold be very affect and the people will visit the website curious to what is happen on that date, or it could not be very affect and the audience just ignores the advert. Many cult films and games would use this form of advertising to create a hype for the new information for example. A company called Interplay have released a “teaser” website to slowly release information on the new game in development. http://fallout-on-line.com/

This advert is a double page spread worth of advert but would be spilt into 2 and put on the right page one after the other. This is not a very common form of advertising but I have always liked it. It is sometimes found on the first 2 pages of a magazine promoting a very popular game release in typical game magazines. I plan to have 2 images of the same thing but aged. For example in this template I have put an old telephone on one page (The first page) and then put a brand new mobile phone on the consecutive page. I want to do this in relation to the music videos story with an image of the girl before and after the transformation. Again I want to keep information on the product to a minimum but because this form of advertising is very large I can included a lot more information then the other forms of advertising.

This is a small advert, usually on a hole page of adverts towards the back of the magazine.

Normally this style of advert would have a big bold image with bold text to make sure the reader views that advert rather then the others surrounding it. I have chose to go the opposite direction but hopefully gain the same effect. By having minimal writing and not giving a huge amount of detail away about my product the audience will become curious about that exactly the advert is trying to do. For example many UK television adverts have done the same by having characters and scenes with little or no relevance to the product. Wongerman

Single page spread.

This is a common advertising technique used within the magazine industry. A basic idea of taking up a whole page of a double page spread to advertise one product. Again this would normally include lots of information about the product, but I plan to do otherwise and keep to the simplistic style of my pieces. If I choose to use this advertisement technique i would include more information about the product (such as a release date and website) but wouldn’t advertise the product itself. There would be no images of the product, just a still image from the music video that has been highly edited. (Background defocused and faces morphed)

Continuous single page advertisement.

This would not a a double spread spread like the image indicates. It would be 2 separate pages put on a double spread spread next to a normal article and would sit one after the other. so as the viewer sees the first advert on the right side of the double spread when they turn they would see the second advert on the right side of the second page. I plan to illustrate a change in the person who is in the image (posed against a brick wall through a medium shot) over the course of the 2 pages.

As i am using a song by a band who frequently do videos for their songs, i want to use their videos to influence the techniques I use. The band have a particular pattern that they follow while making music videos. A lot of their videos are very extravagant and slow pace, exactly how the music is. Several of the videos have bizarre scenes. For example. The video for Mien is stereotypically insulting rap videos, and “I’ve seen the butcher” is simulating a blood orgy. Deftones are known for their strange, original videos and music therefore I want my video to continue this trend.

7 Words.

This was Deftones first music video, typically badly edited and overused effects, much like all bands first music video. Although this was their first produced video it began the strain of Dark and bizarre music videos. All the added sample videos over the live show does not disturb the flow of the music video but it does change the emotions at points, for example the section between 1:57 and 2:01 is a huge change in pace and contrast from the shots used before and after the short time, giving a disoriented feel. This Music video may be a basic low-budget video but it gives the feel of a well produced and thought out video.

Bored.

Again a low-budget video with many effects used. This video is a lot slower compared to 7 Words, but still has a strange feel about it. This music video uses a lot of fish eye lens within it, this lens alone gives off a strange feel because of the angles in which the frame comes out. Also during the live scenes there is a huge change over depth and height of the camera, constantly shifting from high to low shots and close to long shots.

My Own Summer.

Slow, strange location and strange colours sums this video up in 3 words. The fact they are floating in the ocean off the bat gives the music video a bizarre and dark feel to it. The contrast and strange samples added adds to this effect by confusing the viewer. The dark fade used around the frames also adds to this dark feel as well as the constant deep of the camera in and out of the water.

Be Quiet and Drive.

This video is very simplistic, with very little effects and samples, but still it gives off the strange feel. The Defocusing and the sharp shifts in angles makes the video very disorienting, were as the samples and the extended cuts keeps the video flowing and calm.

Back to School.(Mini Maggit)

This video is more fast pace matching the speed of the song. There is constant changes in camera angle and shots used. In some parts there is even different video qualities used. This use of multiple cameras and a lot of switches in angle and length of shot is still used within the bands videos, so these effects are clearly needed in my video to add to the verisimilitude of my piece being made by the band.

Hexagram.

jolting camera, quick shifts in-depth, slow motion sections and additional sample sections. So far these are the trends made by the Deftones videos. Although this video is very different compared to those before it (Being mainly a live performance and using original signature techniques such as lower contrast and dark scenes.) it still keeps loyal to the techniques used in the pervious videos.

Hole in the earth.

Dark. Strange. Bizarre.

Mein.

This video goes back to the original type of videos that Deftones are known for. Slow and bizarre scenes with a lot of slow motion. This video has a little meaning to it as it was designed to humiliate the Rap music scene, but in a sense mocking the music videos made within the genre. All the dancers and people surrounding the band is the bands way of mocking the music industry. This music video is a critical video for me to take influence from as it has all the key features that I would like include.

These videos are key in what I want to follow. I hope my video will keep the signiture techniques together and hope to use them in a way which feels like the band would release it.

deftones also have a trend with the album and single covers they release. From all of the covers they have released so fair we can conclude that the band choose to have a very simplistic style to the covers. All of the images included are usually one to a cover, and have very minimal text (just the band name and the title of the song.) I will make my album cover and album sleeve follow this trend. I plan to have a continuous front and back cover, by having them just be reverses of one another. Then have the images within the album sleeve be stills from the music video it’s self, just edited slightly and have the background defocused slightly.
